Summer pt. 2!

Patrick had an idea and I'm seeing if it floats with y'all. It's in the replies.

So here is the idea: A summer No Shame show in Iowa City. Perhaps even a retro - summer Shame. Are enough regulars interested? It would probably have to be free for the public because we wouldn't be paying rent. Who's in? Who is a poopy pants and says no? Remember saying no means that you are either: Gay, unpatriotic, a baby, a pussy, a terrorist, a republican, nazi, or a buffy fan. That last sentence was a joke... But seriously, what are everyones thoughts?

I do enjoy No-Shame, but the trouble would be in getting writers to show up, and getting audience to show up. I don't see how audience people would really find out about it, unless we were just shooting for the couple dozen or so hardcore fans.

Evan, don't be a baby. Duh. We put up posters. Print out about 70 of them or so and walk around Iowa City putting them on everything we can. As for writers, I've been asking around and it seems most of the hardcore regulars are still in town. Thus the reason I put the proposition on here. And shit, if its just performers laughing at each other, it'll still be a good time. Jamal and Michael and etc. did it in the winter and I hear it was really fun. Do you not like fun Evan? You communist.

I am in favor of this if you can make it happen, but:
-Be warned that it's really hard to get IC perfomers or audience to show up in the summer, even if they're in town, even if they're not doing anything else. Not impossible, but hard.
-I, for one, won't be around most of the summer.

So good luck.

Hey all, there's a comedy open mike Tuesday night (June 12) at the Mill.
-Acts can be any length up to 20 minutes.
-Show starts at 9pm; show up at 8pm to get in the order.
-No cover.

I'm gonna perform and somebunny else should too.

I heard that there will be a show this Friday at No Shame and I am so excited! I have some new material to try out it goes like this:
2 camper (a shopkeeper and assistant) enter from one side and another camper from the other side.

The shopkeeper asks the 3rd camper, "Hey would you like to open a store?"

The boy says "sure" and the Assistant pretends to hit him and carries him out of view.

The Assitant comes back and a customer walks in and asks for an item. The Shopkeeper tells his Assistant, "Go get ____(the name of item)."

Assistant replies , "Yes, Sir!" He walks offstage and you hear screams like "Hey, don't take that!" or similar...

Then Assistant comes out with that item. Customers come in and ask for shirt, shoes, belt, etc.

Then when a customer asks for underwear, the 1st camper who was taken off stage runs off stage in long underwear/boxers/towel screaming "no not my underwear!" through the stage and off the other side.

We will have fun! Will you be in my camping skit?!

Well, Geno, I will not see your work because I will no longer be living in Iowa City. As for a "roster" of performers, while there is no such thing formally, here is a list of some of the most regular regulars.

Adam "Egg" Hahn
Eli Wilkinson
Evan Schenck
Katy Baggs
Michael Tabor
Jon Shelton
Janani
Greg Machlin
Mirri
Eric Landuyt
Jake Gontero
Patrick Ashcraft
Jesse Blaine
Jamal River
King Sophie
Matt Benyo
Arlen Lawson
Brian Lenth
Eric Jesteadt

I think that's most of them, and I bet they'll all be around next semester. So why not give them a shout out and see who you can get to work with you on your new ideas!

thanks for the info, tim. my question now is, if adam "egg" hahn is in charge and you're not even going to be around, why are you the one fielding these questions? not that i don't appreciate it. but what's the chain of command here? who do i talk to to get some things cleared for my shows i want to do?
as for performers do you have any casting suggestions? i want to have a whole ongoing situation between two villain characters and i was thinking of evan schenck and michael tabor for them but is there tension between those two i should know about? could they work together for an indefinite number of scripts? and matt benyo and eric landuyt i would see as the traveling singers, because i know benyo does music, and eric would then be his comedic sidekick. there again, i don't know about any potential personal conflicts but i am wanting to see them work on a few things together. basically, is it safe to put pretty much anybody in anything, or are there dynamics that i should know about 1st? also i'm kind of seeing mirri as the book dealer, but that role does require kind of a lot of memorizing so i would need to talk to whoever it was 1st. is this friday the 1st show, or not till next week? does someone have a list of the people's phone numbers so i can contact them about my scripts ahead of time? thanks.

Guino: I think you misunderstood me. When I said the 1st show wasn't till the 2nd week of classes in Sept, I didn't mean to imply that it was actually the night of August 24th, several days before classes even start. Sorry for the confusion.

As for who can safely be cast with who, I think you'll just have to ask these people yourself

I'm not in charge. I'm just one of the people trying to keep the doors open.

but what's the chain of command here? who do i talk to to get some things cleared for my shows i want to do?

If you want to do a piece at No Shame, there are three rules:
1. It must be written by you or someone who gave you permission to perform it.
2. It must end in five minutes or less. (including set-up and pick-up)
3. The performance must not break anything. (Performers, audience, the law, the stage/lights/curtains of our host theatre, props/scenery for other productions, University of Iowa rules: that might still mean no smoking onstage, etc.)

If you're not sure if your idea breaks those rules, ask any board member (Benyo, Bowman, Wilkinson, myself). We'll try to advise you on staging your vision safely.

as for performers do you have any casting suggestions?

It sounds like you know what to expect from most of the regulars. Any questions are probably best addressed directly to them.

Have you considered bringing in other actors? Nothing against the people you mentioned, but it's always good to see new faces.

is this friday the 1st show, or not till next week?

Our season starts September 7.

does someone have a list of the people's phone numbers so i can contact them about my scripts ahead of time?

I don't. They might see messages you post here.

I have some phone numbers, some e-mail addresses, but I don't know how these people feel about having their contact information advertised here. If you post yours (or get it directly to me; I'm a pretty easy guy to find), I can forward it to them.

Have a nice day.

Thanks for the info! I think I'm starting to get the gist of all this! Couple questions, though:

"If you want to do a piece at No Shame, there are three rules:
1. It must be written by you or someone who gave you permission to perform it."

That's not a problem, but what if we have a piece and we're positive that the person who wrote will never hear about it being performed and probably wouldn't care anyway? Does this seem like a big deal to you, because to me it doesn't seem like a problem really but i guess I should find out 1st.

"2. It must end in five minutes or less. (including set-up and pick-up)"

This I can usually do I think, but if we have a piece that NEEDS to be a little bit more than 5 minutes to work (still very short though, well under 10 minutes or anything) can we set something up in advance to say, "look i know this is going to be a little more than 5 minutes as a one time thing"? I wouldn't even mind announcing it at the beginning of the show, so people would be prepared for it to run a little long and wouldn't be upset or surprised about the length. Let me know the precedent for that kind of arrangement if you would. Thanks again for your time and info.

I'm sorry, but rules are rules.

On 1:
Even if she will, "never hear about it being performed and probably wouldn't care anyway":
A. There are moral, legal, and financial reasons that No Shame doesn't allow the performance of work without the owner's permission. The creator has rights that the arrangement you propose does not respect.
B. No Shame exists as a lab for artists to try new things and find out if they work. If you're talking about an established (published) work, that's probably not happening. If you've found a relatively new work, then you shouldn't deny the author the opportunity to be involved, or to decline participation.
I encourage you to contact the owner of the copyright to discuss an appropriate presentation of the work.

On 2:
The rule isn't, "five minutes unless it NEEDS to be longer." It's "five minutes". (And, yeah, there's a little wiggle room here. If you go 5 min, 10 sec, no big deal. We often cut people off at 6 minutes, but that doesn't mean anyone is entitled to 6. Going significantly over 5 is disrespectful to your fellow performers and a violation of our contract with the audience, even if you warn people.)
If it NEEDS to be longer than five minutes, then it probably needs a different venue. Maybe you want to submit to the City Circle Shorts Festival? Maybe if you do part of your longer piece, you'll find people at No Shame interested in helping you stage the whole thing elsewhere?

Thanks for making that point, I feel like people can use that as a reminder sometimes: it's not a thing that SOME people need to do have, we all across the board can benefit from keep our work short and concise -- five minutes or UNDER! In terms of set up, though, if we have something that is going to take awhile to set up, or maybe take a long time to pick up after it's over, do people generally arrange for the piece to go at a specific time so it doesn't disrupt the flow of the show? Like if some scrubbing or wiping up had to be done, can a piece be decided to go last in the order ahead of time, and it can be fixed up afterwards? Also, if you are moving to LA, who will be taking charge of the troupe? I don't mind being part of orginizing things if you need extra people, just let me know.

That's a good question, Gondo. Technically, you're not supposed to mess up the stage even temporarily. I've heard it said, "If you have to wipe it up, then you've damaged the space." But at the same time, I've seen at least a couple No Shame board members (myself included) defile the stage quite blatantly and unabashedly. It's a confusing world we live in, Gegoo; I wish I had all the answers for you, but I just don't.

>Also, if you are moving to LA, who >will be taking charge of the >troupe? I don't mind being part of >orginizing things

No Shame can always use volunteers in one form or another. Just email one of the remaining board members and see what they can use a hand with
