God damn. That was some fast order-posting, Alyssa.
This was a *serious* NoShame, with Evan & Katie & me doing Arlen-esque pieces (can I use that word? Arlen-esque?) and Luke and Jesse also doing serious stuff.
Kat Udarro is an excellent new writer and I hope he comes back.
"Bitch tore my heart out"--Hmmm. I dunno. I think I needed to take more time with this--which was impossible this week. Look, I'll take a week off next week (though I hope Jake brings me something to perform. That would be very cool.)
Evan had a good note on this, which was that it didn't feel as "true" as the last two pieces. That may be that *because* it's the most autobiographical of the pieces I've done this semester, I had to disguise some stuff. Like everything.
1) Two Jews in a Boat--the last joke made it all worth it.
2) Done By Hand--this was a cool new style from Arlen. Really liked it. Usually he does first-person, but the addition of the psychiatrist/confessor was brilliant.
3) I think I botched the piece by acting too rant-y as the first speaker, but it was a lot of fun to be in.
4) Moist--good. Sally/Not Sally was even better.
5) Born to Be Wild--a good piece in search of a punchline.
6) Canyon Chapter 1--best of!
7) Matrimoniphobia--this was Katie's best piece that I've seen so far. And strangely, it reminded me of Adam Hahn.
8) I very much liked it. An impressive tonal shift for Evan.
9) Nightmare 2--Really liked it.
10) Sally/Not Sally--tightly written. A very good debut.
11) Two Potatoes--this was kinda brilliant.
12 i liked it
13) Uncle Allen--Grotesque and funny.
14) Shutterbug's--Jesse reveals his sensitive side! Well done.
0. Bitch Tore my Heart Out by GREG MACHLIN
When I told Greg that I didn't think this piece was "true", I meant that there was something in it that I didn't believe. I think Greg playing an ex-con was the thing that didn't read, and the metaphor was a little heavy-handed. The mistake might have come from trying to produce a serious piece in no-time flat.
1. Two Jews in a Boat by A GUY WHO HATES JEWS
Pretty sure I've heard him tell that 9/11 joke before, and it's always a killer.
2. Done by Hand by ARLEN LAWSON
This piece was a little bit of a departure for Arlen, in that he didn't devote as much time to crafting the mental image of the scene or evoking a specific emotion. Instead, he created a character and a situation and let the audience work it out. I hope to see more in this line.
3. The Current State of Politics by ERIC LANDUYT & ADAM BEECHER
I don't see the 21-ordinance thing this way.
4. Moist by KAT UDARRO
I like this guy, he wrote good pieces and performed them well.
5. Born to Be Wild by ALEX SCOTT & AMY BERNHARD
I think there was something in this piece that I didn't get, like a punchline related to who the two characters were. Otherwise I thought it was pretty okay.
6. Canyon Chapter 1 by ARLEN LAWSON
This was a welcome surprise, Arlen doesn't usually "rap". I thought it came off well.
7. Matrimoniphobia by KATHRYN "I-would-sell-my-real-brother-on-the-black-market-if-
I-could-be-related-to-Arlen" LAWSON
Somebody pointed out to me later that it must have been intimidating to follow Arlen's piece, doubly so since she put her admiration for him directly in her byline. Since I put the order together, I guess any uneasiness would be down to me.
On the subject of the actual piece, I thought it was pretty good.
8. The Clockwork Man by EVAN SCHENCK
This is a true story!
9. Nightmare 2 by ELI WILKINSON
Apparently Eli completely made this up as he went along. It was pretty good. Is it weird of me that I didn't find it nightmarish, though?
10. Sally/Not Sally by KAT UDARRO
Another good one. I felt this one could have used a little more length to flesh it out, but maybe that's just me wanting more.
11. Two Potatoes Explain Their Feelings for Each Other by TWO POTATOES WILKINSON
Eh, I could take or leave this one.
12. e.e. cummings didn't do it and neither will I by LUKE "lowercase" CHRISTENSEN
This was really a remarkably good piece about relationships. I thought it was honest, realistic, and ended on the right note. Christina played her role very effectively.
13. Uncle Allen Drunkenly Reveals Painful Secrets During a Family Gathering by THE NEPHEW OF UNCLE ALVIN
I did not care for this piece really at all.
14. Shutterbug's Confusion by COOL JESSE
This was good.
Yeah, I don't make the most plausible ex-con.
We'll have to agree to disagree about "Two Potatoes." The sight of Eli, Christina and Eric, sitting in a line and uttering "potato"… I might have to nominate this for best of.
"Potato!"
"Potato?"
"…potato?"
"POTATO!!!"
Evan… is the blog dead? Did the blogworld end? Are we the last two noshame posters alive?
You always have ME!!!
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEEEEEE!!!
Snotnosed, you hobgoblin. I'm sure we'll always have you, whether we like you or not.
And GREG!
It's just you and me now, here in this moment on the No-Shame blog, at the turning of the tide. Congratulations and condolences!
Hey Hey Hey Soooo it's been a while and i don't remember all this stuff, but I'm-a comment on some of it.
0. Machlin- I like when writers do new things (new to me?) and stuff like this is something I'd like to see greg do more of. concentrate on the character rather than a punchline. Punchlines are good and all, but I kind of think they're overrated.
3. Landuyt- now that i've said i thought punchlines are overrated, i'm going to admit that i enjoyed this one far too much. I'm such a hypocrite. crowd participation is great too.
4+10 Kat- I liked Kat's stuff a lot, i hope to see more
7.Katie Lawson- easily her best work yet, way to go. needed a little work on delivery but still a great step.
8. Evan- I liked this a lot Evan, i don't know what criticism to give you. I think unhealthy relationships are something really cool to watch on stage.
Luke, if'n you don't know what criticism to give me, jus gimme a hug.
'kay
Eli what happened to the dating website personal ad?
There haven't been any funny emails yet... They are all, "You sound hot. Wanna suck my cock?" which equals lame since I have shit in there about corn fetishes and whatnot.
