Hey everyone. I'm thinking about starting to perform at No Shame, but I'm not sure my stuff is up to snuff. Do any performers ever get together to brainstorm and rehearse before the show, or does everyone just prefer to work by themselves and wing it? I'm just a little unsure about how to proceed. I really don't want to be the one person who gets up there and sucks.

Anonymous,
Someone from the board will almost always be at the theater building by 10 PM before the show, and they are duty-bound to give some form of constructive criticism if you want it. Look for somebody you recognize in the lounge, or if the lounge is full of theater people, the lobby.

As to worrying about being the only one who sucks, several tips. First, maybe you'll surprise yourself and you actually don't suck. Second, even if you do suck you won't be the only one. It's just in the nature of the format to have at least a couple crap pieces a night. Third, with some activities you have to start out sucking to later become awesome. Writing can be one such activity.

Good luck,
Evan R. Schenck

Yeah Anonymous, anything goes, as long as it doesn't break the three rules.

Most pieces are gone through once at most, but some are memorized and choreographed. Lots of pieces have been written at 10:30 or made up on the spot. I've written and acted in pieces I didn't think were great. There's always someone willing to read a piece if you bring it in, or you can bring your own friends (please do!) to perform it.

The key is in the title, "No Shame." If you do something sucky one week, you can redeem yourself the next. If it does suck, we'll forget it once the next piece starts, if it's good, we'll quote it for weeks. Pretty safe gamble.

And you can even submit it anonymously, just in case. There's a mailbox slot in the theater building (Ask Hillary in the office where the TA mailboxes are if you don't know). if it ends up being received well, you can stand up after it's over and claim credit if you want.

If you've got anymore questions, find a board member before the show (we usually meet in the green room) and we'll help you out.

Though I won't be there tonight, I hope to see your stuff in the coming weeks! :D
