Best of No Shame SPRING '10 NOMINATIONS

Hey all you peoples! The time has come for YOU to tell us what pieces you liked and would like to see again in this semester's Best of No Shame! Just go through the Orders from this semester and Dead week of last semester and vote for your favorites!

*Note. Please try to nominate a full order (over ten pieces). This helps us whittle down the fan faves and doesn't put the load on the Board to come up with the order with only a handful of pieces nominated.

I would like to also request that Recollections of Loves Past by Dr. Mondo Buttplug, esq. NOT be included in Best Of. It's a well-written piece, but it's not the kind of piece that should be exhibited as representative of NST for people who could well be coming for the first time.

I see that most of these nominations are comedies. Might I also nominate:

Adventures of Batman 1 by Arlen Lawson

and

Taken For a Fool by Eli Wilkinson.

They are two serious pieces that I feel were really strong and would give the show some balance.

I'm not posting a full order yet, but at a glance these are things I really want to see in the show in no particular order.

Jelly Belly -- Calvin
David and Gregory are Best Friends -- David and Gregory
Freeze Frame -- Triple Bees
That one song I can't remember the name of. Not Emo Kids, but the other one. -- Taylor Cook
Recollections of Loves Past -- Dr. Mondo Buttplug (the British Nasal one)
The Fifth Dimension -- Spencer Abbe
That Damned Alphabet Part A -- Noah S. Brown
Fuck Your Mother in the Ass Volume 9 -- Lord Sir Chips Simon, Esquire
Gamera in Gamorrah -- James S. Roth
Never Trust a Horse - Evn & Kty
Corey Julian's Workout -- Corey Julian
Buried Treasure -- Leigh Mather
ROCK N ROLL PIZZA! --Katy Baggs. ? for some reason I thought this was last semester
The One in Green -- Maddie, Marek, Spencer, and Morgan (Pride and Prejudice)
Modern Day Mary Poppins -- Asher Stuhlman

As for Recollections of Loves Past. I think it should absolutely be in the show. It was incredibly well written and I think it was one of Mondo's best works. To say that it shouldn't be considered for not being representative of the content at NS would just be untrue, since it WAS at NST and Mondo is a regular contributor. It might come as a shock for people attending No Shame for the first time, and I believe that the shock of NST is what makes it so exciting.

Besides, 5 minutes of gay erotica never did anybody any harm.

Was Andrew Clancey's thing good? I was getting dressed as a clown so I missed it.

Loneliness by Kristin Wirtz
PUT ME IN YOUR SHOW, by Katy Baggs
The Most Average Song, by Your Favorite Band
David And Gregory Are Best Friends, by David and Gregory
Four Terrible Poems I Wrote in Middle School Read in a Dramatic Manner, by Mirri
Dear Iowa City City Council, by Even Schneck

@Luke: I think including it would not be setting our best foot forward, so to speak. While it is distinctly a No Shame piece, it shouldn't be performed as a "best" piece to people who don't know who Dr. Mondo Buttplug is. A first-timer was next to me when it was first performed and she was nonplussed.

That Dr. Mondo piece gave me a boner...

But I would argue that it definitely belongs in best of. First it was perhaps the best written story of the semester. Second it's delivery by Eric could not have been better. This helps showcase that performance makes a piece just as much as the writing. (I kind of wish Eric had a costume that he could wear to make it even better.) Third, its subject matter fits the show well and if people are as perplexed as your first timer, oh well there are 15 other pieces. And lastly, I would say that the shock level of the piece adequately demonstrates what it means to have no shame in your writing. The piece pulled no punches. It wasn't afraid to go where a younger writer would shy away from.

Why does it matter if people know who Dr Mondo is? Does anyone really? The debate seems to go on week after week. Or are you claiming that you know the true identity of Dr Mondo Buttplug?

Anyone who tries to blackball "Recollections of Loves Past" is a homophobe!

Blogger ERIC L. said...

On the whole Dr. Mondo thing:
I find it suprising that the "Recollections" piece disturbed/offended someone so much that they nominated it to NOT be in Best Of. I admit the graphic descriptions of homosexual sex were a little off-putting (I felt uneasy reading some of them out loud), but I think the piece worked as a satire of erotica and agree with Eli that the author clearly has no shame and went far beyond where most writers do.
(Aside: Eli, you said Dr. Mondo went where a "younger writer" would be afraid to go. Do you think Mondo is an older person who's been doing No Shame for a while?)
I think it's a hasty generalization to say that people who don't want to see it again are homophobic. Several people have nominated "A Love Like No Other"; that doesn't mean they didn't like "Recollections", just that they liked "Love" more. I thought Evan and Mirri did a great job performing it. Plus, I'm guessing that people who don't like explicit descriptions of gay sex probably don't like explicit descriptions of straight sex either.
If people want to see "Recollections" again, I'll gladly step up and perform it. It's definitely a balls-out No Shame piece.
(Just don't ask me to take my balls out. I don't think that would be good for anyone.)

So anal sex and bestiality are fine as long as straight people are doing it, huh? Look inside yourselves people and recognize the hate.

@Eric L: I thought it was a fine piece - but at the same time, it's not a piece I want to have to see more than once. Also, a non-regular that came with me and James to the show was audibly disturbed by it and she hasn't been back since.

Conversations with Delroy Banvooggernut by Resident of Wyoming

A Creation Story by Spencer Abbe

Dear Iowa City City Council by Evan Skank

This is how I always meet people by Jordi

97 Year Old Virgin James Roth

Recollections of Loves Past by Dr. Mondo

I think simply by merit of the fact we have a gutless, spineless censor among our ranks we are now required to put "Recollections" in the order.

"I thought it was a fine piece - but at the same time, it's not a piece I want to have to see more than once."

So step out of the theater for about five minutes and come back when it's done.

"Also, a non-regular that came with me and James to the show was audibly disturbed by it and she hasn't been back since."

By all means let's select the best-of order according to what pleases your easily-offended friend rather than the large number of people who saw the piece and enjoyed it.

remember that calvin pennybacker piece where Evan presented his vagina to Katy and she masturbated her penis to the sight of it? I kinda liked that one. I really liked Evan and Katy's performances. But I don't know if I like it enough to see it in best of.

Does anybody else have any opinions on that one?

Oh also! There's a really good chance that Kjai won't be able to come to best of NST because he is striking a show that night. Or maybe he'll come for a few minutes and leave or something.

That put's calvin's jelly belly in jeopardy

@luke: That piece would be good for Best Of.

(Oh, and in the spirit of making this dialogue more open, and so you all know who you're talking to, I'm Asher. My opinion's worth just as much as anybody else's when it comes to a Dr. Mondo Buttplug piece, but you ARE talking to the guy who wrote a piece parodying his style.)

1)
Song Name and Lyrics Changed for Copyright Reasons OR: Because it's dead week and we think we can get away with it
by Your Favorite band
(I loved how well this worked for the start of the show.)

2)
Three Levels of Abstraction
or
This Play Can Only be Performed Once and Then Can Never be Performed Again
by Asher Stuhlman
(These two pieces had a similar feel to them. Either one would work.)

3)
The Gettysburg Address
or
The Fifth Dimension
by Spencer Abbe
(I would actually like to see both of these, even though they both featured Spencer. His spoonerism delivery of The Gettysburg Address was flawless but I think one of his stories should make it into the order as well.)

4)
Dear Iowa City City Council
by Evan Skank
(This was just plain entertaining. I also liked the piece Evan did about being addicted to Anime, but I can't remember what that was called or if it was even this semester.)

5)
Paulie Crestfallen the Clown with Major Depressive Disorder Makes a Friend
by Luke Christensen
(Best of No Shame wouldn't be complete without Paulie. This one was my favorite this semester.)

6)
Alternate Character Interpretation: Data
by Evan and? Katy
(I just put this one in here because I shamelessly love Star Trek. I also remember some girl doing a short piece about loving science fiction that I would like to see again if anyone knows who she is.)

7)
I'm Not Wearing Pants Right Now!
by Morgan Miller
(Classy but sassy. This would be a great segue into some of the dirtier pieces.)

8)
"that calvin pennybacker piece where Evan presented his vagina to Katy and she masturbated her penis to the sight of it"
(I also kinda liked this one and I also really liked Evan and Katy's performances.)

9)
Recollections of Loves Past
or
A Love Like No Other
by Dr. Mondo Buttplug
(I don't feel like the semester could be properly represented without a piece by Dr. Buttplug. It probably isn't a good idea to end the show on this though.)

9.maybe)
This Play Can Only be Performed Once and Then Can Never be Performed Again
by Asher Stuhlman
(this has to go somewhere in the order if the first part gets replayed. I think it could have an interesting effect if used to bring the whole show full circle near the end.)

10)
Guy with stripey socks spinning flashy things around in the dark
by Kyle Ford
(If this guy can be found, it would be fun to watch him do his stuff once more. It's not something I'd want to watch every week, but it's definitely a noteworthy part of this semester, in my opinion.)

More on the Dr. Mondo debacle:
I think Asher is more concerned with improving future No Shame attendance than being a homophobe. It's typical for people who don't turn out for regular shows to come to Best Of assuming it is "the best." If the show delivers, some of those people might come back the next semester on a more regular basis. If Asher knows someone actually made a point to never come back to No Shame because of Dr. Mondo's piece, then I can understand his concern that other people might do the same. It's not gutless or spineless to worry about these things. On the other hand, the notoriety of the piece might work out favorably and make people want to see what all the fuss is about. "Rigga the Fart Machine" made it into Best Of more on sheer infamy than quality (in my opinion), but that was the decision of the board at that time. Ultimately, it's up to the current board to put together the best show possible, and if enough people do want to see "Recollections", they would be remiss in excluding it. Right now, "Love Like No Other" and "Recollections" seem to be neck and neck nominations-wise, so we will probably get our sodomy and bestiality in one form or another.

Kevin - Evan's anime piece was "I Am So Strung Out," and while it wasn't this semester, it was performed at last semester's Dead Week. And whatever's on that night is nommable.

The problem with doing the monologue about Anime was that it was entirely ad-libbed and it happened months ago, so I doubt I could do the same piece again.

That Damned Alphabet part A. -Noah

Sky Patrol (Episode I II or III)

or

Dead Baby Physics Exam (the one with the physics questions related to dead babies.)

That one piece with the Moose and the game warden. (I know that piece was sensitive in the end, but I loved how the monologue was portrayed. I loved the Wyoming voice used.)

Well Evan, it wouldn't have to be the exact same piece. The concept was brilliant and I could tell it hit home for quite a few people in the audience that night. The experience of being both naive and fascinated by Anime is not uncommon with it becoming such a huge part of pop culture over the past 15 years. Your particular flavor of humor really turned it into something fun to watch. My nomination for the piece is also an attempt to show No Shame's softer, fuzzier side to counter-balance the heavier Dr. Buttplug and the like. I think I'll go watch some Dragonball now. Power-pole, EXTEND! ;P
