IC show Feb 1st

We had a show. The order will be posted soon (I hope). It got left at the Theatre Building and I can't get there because of the weather.

I wrote the order down, but I recycled it immediately after NoShame.

John (Bates?) had a piece about Shakespeare, where he proved he was no one-time fluke.

12) Things I Like--by Janani
Sweet and wonderful. Is Janani Iowa City's own David Sedaris?

America's Newest Game Show Craze (my piece): I thought the actors did well, particularly John (on one side) and Eli (on the other), who were very engaged despite having only 5 lines between them. If I could've done it over, I would have done a read-through beforehand and had everyone go faster, with no pauses.

I am hell of disappointed by the way

All crying into my glass of soy milk

All wishing I was dead so the hurting would stop

This is maybe the worst thing that ever happened to me dogg

Evan, you saying "dogg" reminds me of Sean Connery in "Finding Forrester" saying, "You're the man now, dogg!' with his thick Scottish accent. It sounds just as comical in your voice as it does in his.

At long last, I can review the show!

2)From the Logs of Secret Agent Cammy Stamina, Squadron Sever Supernaut, Parts One and Two - Katy Baggs
I enjoyed Katy's wordplay. She's very good at wordplay. If there were competitive wordplay, I'm sure she'd do well.

3)Jim - Karl Gronwell
All right. Not bad or great, just all right.

3.5) Bakers Teasings- Dumplings and Cider
Pretty good.

4) On Sonnet 116 - John Bates
Hilarious. John is able to take seemingly disparate things and connect them in very funny ways.

5) Suck my Caucus- The Late Woody Guthrie
I enjoyed this, especially "Rudy Tuesday." I'm glad Dick came back because, good or bad, he always does something memorable.

6) Ring Bell for help - Evan Schenck
A lot of humor can come from simple things like a bell. I enjoyed this piece and the character interactions. I think there could have been just a little bit more energy though.

8) The Barber on Fleet Street - Madam Winters
The humor was so-so, but I liked the actors' commitment. I hope the young people keep coming back and polishing their skills.

9) America's Newest Game Show Craze - Greg Machlin
I liked how Eli drooled during the performance. Evan makes a great smarmy game show host. The pace needed to be faster though.

10) Poker with the Prophets: And yes the prophet Muhammad is in the piece by we have covered his face for PC reasons- Eli Wilkinson
Good writing. I especially liked the "I wish there were 5 or 6 million more of you" line and the fact that it took most people a good five seconds to get it. The pacing could have been better; more energy and faster cue pickups.

11) Honey Doos and Honey Don'ts -Luke Christensen and Christina Gulick
Luke and Christina play well together. They have good energy no matter what they're doing.

12) These things Pleased Me - Janani
This was funny on one level, but I also found it sad. Janani's younger self reminded me of the innocent, optimistic person I used to be at that age, the people and things I loved back then, and the many ways in which life has changed. It's bittersweet how the things we love can become trivial or ironic, but the fact we loved them unabashedly is always touching.

I like the way the order began and ended with pieces about being young. Good way to bookend the evening.

Jesus God, this was hysterical. Best of!

3)Jim - Karl GronwAll
I'm glad Karl is back! We need more theatre people. We need more people in general.

5) Suck my Caucus- The Late Woody Guthrie
This was in fact as funny as Capitol Steps, and considerably shorter, making it better. Of course, I'm not a fan of Capitol Steps.

6) Ring Bell for help - Evan Schenck
This piece created a wonderful zen world. Nicely done, Evan.

8 & 11 were good too.
